A Surprise at Craggy Gardens

Back in September, Aaron and I went hiking at Craggy Gardens on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville. It was a beautiful afternoon, and as we were walking back to the car, a man told us to get our dog in the car as fast as we could. A bit surprised, I asked why, and he said there was a bear nearby in the picnic area. Apparently bears do not like dogs, so I put him in the car and went to take a look at the bear. It was a little one, maybe a year or two old, and he was raiding the picnic ground! First he growled at a couple eating KFC until they finally got up and left him to devour the rest of their dinner. Next, the bear went after some chicken patties cooking on a grill, to the dismay of the family getting ready to eat them! It was awesome to see a bear so close, but also very sad because he will likely have to be relocated, or worse, killed. Two other bears in the area had to be removed, and one of those was actually put down because it had become aggressive. This young bear seemed a bit too bold for his age…
