I have been SO BUSY the last few months, especially with all of the editing this month after all the summer weddings. When I do have a little free time, I have been able to get away for a few days in the mountains at my family’s mountain house. My mom has a serious green thumb and has morning glories and moon flowers growing on the porch. The morning glories bloom during the day and the moon flowers kick in when the evening sets in. They are both beautiful! Here’s my portrait of a morning glory:

I love how you can see how insects have tracked pollen down the flower petals in that last picture.

A moon flower getting ready to unfurl.

My friend Morgan came to visit and we went for a hike on the parkway with Sugar and Rio.

Does anyone know what type of plant/tree this is? It looks like some sort of chestnut to me, but I don’t really know. Pretty cute caterpillar, huh?

I made this salad out of arugula, tomatoes, bell pepper and lemon cucumbers my mother grows in the garden at the mountain house. So delicious! I can’t get enough of the nutty, spicy flavor of fresh arugula.

Aaron and I made a batch of buttermilk biscuits for the first time a few nights ago, and boy, they were tasty. My grandparents used to make buttermilk biscuits when we went to visit them every summer in the mountains, and I’ve been wanting to see if I could make a successful batch for years. It was pretty simple and quick. Wish I had made them sooner!
This summer has been a whirlwind. Time is becoming warped, and things that happened 2 weeks ago feel like months ago for some reason.

On Saturday evening after I returned home from shooting a wedding in Chapel Hill, Aaron and I realized we didn’t have anything tying us down on Sunday, so we took off for Roaring Gap, where my family has an old farm house. It is my favorite place on earth, and the one place I really call home since I’ve been there every summer for my entire life. When I was growing up, we lived in Texas and would make the 3 day trek across the country to visit my grandparents at Roaring Gap. Now that I live in NC, I try to go as much as possible. This has been a very busy summer, so it’s only the 2nd time I’ve visited. It’s really peaceful, swinging in the hammock or sitting on the porch and listening to the hum of the crickets and watching the golden light in the meadow. I really love it.

My mom planted a little apple tree several years ago, and the tree almost didn’t make it, since my mom and dad both accidentally ran over it with their cars. Today it’s big and full of apples, and they were perfectly ripe this weekend, so we picked a bunch and are going to make an apple pie. YUM.

Today one of our chickens laid her first egg! I wasn’t even looking out for eggs since they aren’t supposed to start laying for another 2 weeks at least, so I was pretty surprised to see one in their pen when I went to feed them an apple. It’s fairly small, but it’s in great shape and we will eat it for dinner and see how it tastes. :) Yard eggs are so much better than the kind you get at the store. The yolks are darker colored and they have more nutrients. Excited! They should lay an egg every day or every other day, so we will be getting between 2 and 5 eggs a day- a lot! Let me know if you want to try some because we will have more than we can eat! Yesterday I got my new 35mm 1.4 lens in the mail, and it takes some pretty pictures! All of the photos I took today were with this new lens.

THE egg!
Just so you can see how quickly the chickens have grown, it was only a few months ago (March) when they looked like this:

You can see more photos of them when they were little cuties here.
Today they look like this:

Hello ladies.

Guess what?!

Chicken butt!

This year I made my first attempt at a garden. I started with big plans but ended up having to rethink things when the big plot out back wasn’t getting enough sun. Instead, I ended up planting in pots at the side of the house. It’s not as big a garden as I was hoping for, but we are getting tons of cherry tomatoes, and a decent number of cucumbers, jalepenos and okra. This week we made jalapeño cheese grits using the jalapeños from the garden. Tasty! The zucchini, lettuce and big heirloom tomatoes are coming along slowly, but it’s fun watching them grow. Yesterday I bought a fig tree at the Salisbury Farmers’ Market, and it already has some little figs on it. We are going to plant it this weekend, and I am so looking forward to picking fresh figs right out of the yard!

Yesterday I photographed Julie and Zubin’s wedding at the Blueberry Villa in Banner Elk, NC. Boy, was it a beautiful, perfect day. I’ve barely gone through the photos, but this one stood out to me. Usually I don’t like to get much sun flare in my photos, but this effect seemed appropriate when Julie’s bridesmaids were helping her put on her veil. Julie was such a pretty bride, and the Blueberry Villa was elegant, roomy, and basically the perfect space for getting some unique “getting ready” shots. I would highly suggest it to anyone looking for a fabulous wedding venue!
